Premchand Comedies

About

2 Timeless stories about relationships, greed & passion. Premchand’s literary legacy is a testament to the power of words, inspiring generations to strive for a better tomorrow. His pen painted vivid portraits of rural India, weaving tales of love, struggle, and social reform.

Act 1 – Shatranj Ke Khiladi
Set in 1856, this satirical play is based on the reign of Wajid Ali Shah, the last Nawab of Awadh. The story revolves around the futile struggles of the Nawab and his governors, who are more interested in indulging in luxuries than governing the kingdom.

Meanwhile, two noblemen, Mirza Sajjad Ali and Mirza Kazim Ali, are so engrossed in playing chess that they neglect their responsibilities and ignore the impending danger of the British annexation of their kingdom.

As the British East India Company’s forces approach Awadh, the Nawab and his courtiers are too busy with their indulgences to notice. The two chess-obsessed noblemen continue to play, oblivious to the fate of their kingdom.

Through this absurd and humorous portrayal, the play critiques the decadence and apathy of the ruling class, which led to the downfall of Awadh and the eventual colonization of India.

Premchand’s classic satire remains a powerful commentary on the dangers of complacency and the importance of responsible leadership.

Act 2 – Do Behnein
“Do Behnein” is a poignant tale of two sisters, Roopkumari and Ramdulari, and their contrasting lives. Roopkumari lives a contented life with her husband and children in a modest middle-class home. However, her life takes a dramatic turn when she encounters her younger sister, Ramdulari, who has suddenly amassed wealth and status.

Consumed by envy and a desire for luxury, Roopkumari begins to resent her husband’s inability to provide the same opulent life as her sister’s. As she becomes increasingly disillusioned with her own life, she starts to prioritize material wealth over her relationships and values.

This play, adapted from a short story, serves as a scathing critique of societal greed and corruption. It exposes the devastating consequences of allowing our insatiable desire for wealth and status to consume us, ultimately leading to moral decay and human suffering.

Through the sisters’ contrasting journeys, “Do Behnein” masterfully explores the complexities of human relationships, the dangers of envy and materialism, and the importance of staying true to one’s values in the face of adversity.

ASHADH KA EK DIN

About

Written by Mohan Rakesh, this iconic Hindi play tells the story of Kalidas, a legendary Sanskrit dramatist, and his struggles with modernity, tradition, and personal relationships. Inspired by Kalidas’s poetic drama “Meghdutam”, the play explores themes that still resonate today:

– The conflict between tradition and modernity
– The dilemma of a modern man torn between old and new values
– The condition of women in society
– The complexities of relationships between men and women
– The clash between generations

The protagonist, Kalidas, is torn between his conception of life and his feelings for Mallika, who is deeply connected to him. However, a sudden turn of events separates them, leaving a void that even time cannot fill.

Through this play, Mohan Rakesh masterfully highlights that life is not just about our individual experiences but also about the perspectives and stakes of those around us.

“Aashadh Ka Ek Din” is a thought-provoking and poignant portrayal of human struggles, awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Best Play in 1959.
